damn. thats crazy
New meaning to 'Cancer Sticks'
I just saw a similar posting at Peet's Coffee & Tea. Was there some new legislation passed that I'm not aware of? Didn't see it at Starbucks…
meh not a single fuck is given
They have to alert this now?
it seems that Acrylamide isn't being put into the food by McDonalds, but is a natural side effect of cooking the food.
"Acrylamide also occurs in many cooked starchy foods and is of concern as a possible carcinogen. Acrylamide was accidentally discovered in foods in April 2002 by scientists in Sweden when they found the chemical in starchy foods, such as potato chips, French fries, and bread that had been heated (production of acrylamide in the heating process was shown to be temperature-dependent)."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acrylamide
I took the grands in a Mcd the other day and they got apple dippers and there was no caramel. I went and asked for it and the clerk said they didn't have it anymore as they were going "Healthy". I told her if that's the case they should start with the nasty fries and burgers.
Which means it isn't just McDonald's. You can make acrylamide at home too!
+Andrew Bates That's what the Peet's coffee sign said as well. A side effect of roasting coffee beans, I was assuming, which would mean all coffee would be affected.
+P. David Gardner and +Colleen Marlow indeed, it seems to be a side effect of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maillard_reaction
I rarely eat there. But I don't know if its just a McDonald's thing or not. But I am sure.they wouldn't do it voluntarily
Thanks for posting this! it's the first time i see this!
+Joe Martinez You are welcome feel free to share it with all your circles so they know as well.
hm… don't have such warnings in this side of the world…
+Gabriel T that's because the side of the atlantic that +Adam Guerbuez lives on is more likely to sue :p
Regardless, it's kinda scare mongering to be honest…
i would love for my kids to be like "yea my dad died from eating mcdonalds." "Wow, he mustve been fat, and lazy, and psychotic man…" "no…just got cancer from a sandwich…he didn't eat there much."
See, the optimal wording in this notice is "Known to the State of California"…
Doesn't make it actually true…
Guessing its a CA Prop 65 warning. While kind of stupid because even milk causes cancer in high enough quantities, those of us that live here get used to see it posted on stuff as banal as vinegar in grocery stores.
Wiki it if you care more.
lol, so we shouldnt eat anything anymore except broiled steamed foods, lol
Boiled fluorine, chlorine and calcium in the water reacts with vegetable pesticide to create the ultimate CARCINOGEN
So enjoy – the masses are gonna be poisoned one way or another…
lol, looks like theres no way out, everywhere is a wrong turn.how about eating it raw?
the moral of the story is, everything's gonna kill ya anyways, just eat what ya want and enjoy life…
+Rachele Dojillo best way to avoid death is suicide.
Oh wait…
It's fated… I have seen some freaks who smoke all their lives and ate all the most horrible, oily, greasy and cholesterol filled foodstuff.
They are so well and fit as a fiddle!
Hahaha – it's quite a joke actually
yep, eat what makes you happy and satisfied, hihi
Im actually eating at mcdo right now, who wants some fries?:)
Lol I work at a McDonalds…its not the fat people who come all the time, but there are some of those ya know…
lol, im not fat.:D but i love mcdonald's.
Various studies have confirmed that acrylamides (carcinogen in fried foods) are for real. At least McDonalds is giving their customers this information.
+david wright No-one is contesting that. If you check the posts I've made in this thread, you'll see that the prevalence of acrylamides in food means that McDonalds is in no way responsible for the chemical being in the food it serves, and that you're already taking in copious amounts of the chemical on a weekly basis anyway.
More information is always better. The problem is that the Prop doesn't require enough information to make an informed decision. It's designed to scare you.
+Matthew Ghilarducci yeah, that sign just makes me want to buy some burgers and fries and go google it for myself.
still going to eat there occasionally, but thanks for the heads up McD's.
Uuuuuughh… I like the detail they go into, but exactly as it says it's a product of both caramelisation and the Maillard Reaction, and therefore endemic to cooked foods, and thus pointless to warn people about unless you're trying to get them on a steamed and raw only food diet. There is no informed choice to make, since there is no information there. It's quite literally saying "Cooked food may cause certain types of cancer". Which, bee tee dubs, is an inaccurate statement.
Please don't spread this around, and let it die an early death. If you want to spread something about this around, give real information, like "Yo! Browning food may or may not lead to cancer! Results of tests regarding this to-be theory pending, but check these links! (link link link)."
And +Nathaniel Fries, this is no reason to eat at McDonald's less. There's enough of those reasons to go around, but this one isn't one of them. If it is, it's also enough reason to steam your bacon, and cook your french toast on so low a heat that the egg barely cooks (get yer pan to 185F/85C, and you're good).
And Adam, I would suggest killing this post, lest you unintentionally spread any more misinformation.
too late, it's already been spread at least 32 times.
…I didn't spot that. Well, I hope it manages to fall on it's own and not nail itself down hard into too many folks decision making.
Veggie for life.
+Steban Hernández , just don't fry, roast, or grill them
Typical CA Warning message. I really think CA should be it's own country.
Finally, McDonald's is being honest.
Please provide appropriate, accurate & official web link for back to back support.
I find it wholly ridiculous that people will continue to eat there regardless of this message. I haven't eaten from a McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, etc. in 7 years and I'm damn happy with my decision.
lol…. I think it is a problem!!!
Just because McDonald's are warning people. We eat food products everyday which contain things which aren't good for us, yet because 90% of the people don't know that it's harmful they eat it anyway. Tbh, it would be a pretty boring diet if we cut everything out that was "bad" for us. Oh and no, I don't work for McD's or any other food company.
Bad news!!!
So true Chris.
+Adam Guerbuez Thank you so much for sharing such an Important issue…
Ppl see such note FROM McDonalds ITSELF and they are still eating it !!
HOWCOME ?!!
I had heard about this a while ago. Apparently cooking starches at high temperatures creates a carcinogenic substance. Normally the substance is below significant amounts but it has been found it larger amounts in fast food, especially french fries. This was in Popular science a year or so ago.
That is why 80%+ of my diet is organic real food.
quality over quantity.
I find it funny how people are shocked at McDonald's about this, when clearly it can apply to any food that browns when cooked. Are BBQ's sold with a cancer warning if you char your food because I'm pretty sure the levels of cancer causing chemicals will far higher in your burnt sausages and burgers than in some fried potatoes!!
It's all food not just Mcdonalds. Anytime you brown starches this process occurs. Grilling meat also creates carcinogens, right there in your own back yard.
IN GENERAL SAY NO TO ALL JUNK FOOD
No way, I only eat home made acrylamide!
+Ahmad Mattar, it's not just junk food, it's any food that gets browned. It's right there in the picture, even.
Eating cooked food is now harmful to our health lol
Oh right, they got paranoid right there.still eating mcdo,:p it gets bad when its toooooo much.
The problem is that those who eat at McDonalds already don't care enough about their health to change.
+Gabriel T were are you?
Its not a problem if you eat at a moderate amount, its not like youll eat processed and fried foods everyday.look up the food pyramid and fats is essential in a balanced diet too.
this is my country and food that I eat > http://vimeo.com/31642347
